AMMON — A local event allows community members to think creatively and decorate pumpkins in unique ways and potentially win prizes.
The City of Ammon is hosting a “Pumpkin Walk” event and encouraging anyone interested to participate, including businesses, organizations, non-profits, schools, clubs, and teams.
The Ammon Pumpkin Walk is held at McCarwin Park. The deadline to register to create a clever display is Friday, October 11th. Click here for more information.
“It’s free to enter the exhibit. This is a very popular community event,” said Randall Miller, Ammon’s recreation director.
Past events have featured about 50 exhibits, and Miller described some of the exhibits he saw to EastIdahoNews.com.
“We have great artists. We also had a Wizard of Oz exhibit. We had The Nightmare Before Christmas, Harry Potter, Charlie Brown. Those are some of the classics,” he said.
Businesses like car dealerships will make cars from pumpkins. There was a pumpkin patient and a pumpkin dentist at the dental clinic.

There is no theme, I will leave it to your imagination.
“All we ask is that it be family-friendly and that it be kept clean – no spooky, no ridiculous, no clean, no gaudy, no promotional. Create a fun display using pumpkins,” Miller said.
There is also a chance to win prizes. There are various categories such as school, business, and “simple but gorgeous”. Prizes are for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
“The best overall display costs $1,000,” Miller said. “People have really stepped up their game over the last few years.”
He added there will also be a giant pumpkin contest called “Pumpkin Patch of the Giants.” Prizes are $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $300 for third place.
“Put your giant pumpkin on a pallet and bring it in (Oct. 19), and we’ll have a forklift and a scale there so you can weigh it,” he said. “The giant pumpkin that won last year was just over 1,200 pounds. That was huge.”
If you don’t want to enter for the pumpkin display, anyone is welcome to come walk around McCarwin Park and see the pumpkins starting October 19th. There will be a kick-off event that day from 12pm to 3pm featuring food, music and vendors. Judging will be based on creativity, imagination, and use of pumpkins and gourds.
The pumpkins are on display until October 31st, Halloween, and anyone is free to view them.
