MERIDIAN, Mich. (WTOK) – Monday News 11 reported on a story surrounding Lauderdale County’s property tax hike.
The Tax Assessor’s Office is required to revalue properties in the county every four years, and recent increases in home prices and construction costs have increased property values by 20 percent.
Seeing this significant increase, the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors removed the project from its list of project requests as a way to avoid increasing millage rates.
The tax increase could have been even worse if regulators had increased millage prices.
“So this has been a year of revaluation for everyone. And everyone’s property has been revalued. Some people have gone down, some people have gone up. It’s just that property values have changed, and the value of That’s tied to your mileage rate, which determines how much tax you pay. So we went through the budget, and we got a request. We cut, you know, $4.5 million in mileage. To get it down to the point where it’s not necessary,” said Kyle Rutledge, chairman of the board of supervisors.
Lauderdale County’s current miscellaneous charge rate is 118.56, according to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.
