Whatcom County, Wash. (MyBellinghamNow.com) – The Whatcom County Treasurer’s Office says property taxes for the second half of the year are expected to be paid by Thursday, October 31st.
Taxpayers are responsible for making sure their payments are mailed or postmarked on time to avoid interest and penalties.
The site does not have a postmark expiration date, and customers are advised not to make online payments as any payment not received by the deadline will be considered late.
From November 1, interest of up to 1% per month will be levied on unpaid taxes.
If taxes are not paid by December 1st, an additional penalty of 8% may be assessed.
According to the Treasury Department, there are multiple ways to pay property taxes. Taxpayers can pay online using electronic checks with a $1.00 convenience fee per transaction. Alternatively, a flat fee of $3.50 applies to Visa or MasterCard debit cards. Credit cards are subject to a fee of 2.35% (minimum $2.00) of taxes paid.
Taxes can also be paid through the automated phone system at 855-461-9815. Convenience fees apply.
You may be eligible for a property tax exemption if you meet the following criteria: You are age 60 or older or retired due to disability, own your primary residence, and have an income of $52,000 or less. For more information, contact the Whatcom County Assessor’s office at 360-778-5050.
