It’s Fire Prevention Week, and it’s a good time to resurface some sobering statistics. Three out of five fire deaths occur in homes that do not have fire alarms or fire alarms.
There are more house fires happening right now, and they are burning faster, hotter and more dangerous than ever before. That’s because many new homes have open floor plans with fewer walls and doors, allowing fire to travel faster and more freely. Another factor is that many homes use furniture made from synthetic materials such as plastic or particle board. These materials burn much faster than materials such as solid wood, making it more important than ever to receive early fire warnings and evacuate.
This advice from the National Fire Protection Association makes it easy to install alarms on each floor, test them at least once a month, and replace them after 10 years. Consumer Reports’ unique smoke detector reviews are free and do not require membership.
The SimpliSafe SSSD3 dual-sensor smoke detector received the highest score for detecting both burning and smoldering fires. It’s battery powered, so you don’t need a professional to wire it up. They can also be interconnected, so when one alarm goes off, the others follow. The battery-powered Kidde i9070 smoke detector also received the highest score for detecting both burning and smoldering fires. The Siterwell GS526A smoke detector from Walmart is also a good option and comes with a 10-year battery.
