LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – University Police Southern Command announces a scam is underway where callers impersonate police departments.
The caller claims to be from the University Police Department. You may be told that the victim or their family has an outstanding warrant for your arrest or that you are in trouble with the police.
The suspect then demands money or threatens arrest.
University police say the call is a scam. The department will not contact people or ask for payments to have charges dropped or warrants dismissed.
Police are asking anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and call police directly to verify the nature of the call.
University Police say anyone who receives a suspicious call should:
Don’t give in to the pressure to take immediate action. Don’t engage in conversation as the scammer may record your responses. Do not provide credit card numbers, bank account information, social security numbers, or other personal information to third parties. If the caller asks you to send money via wire transfer, prepaid debit card, or to a Bitcoin account, do not send money. Do not travel to the location the caller asks you to go.
