Residents will vote on bond refinancing and sales tax extensions in November to significantly improve the city’s infrastructure.
TONTITETOWN, Ark. — The city of Tontitown is looking to make some much-needed improvements.
Tontitown Regional Development Director Mark Latham said it will be “the fastest growing percentage-wise in the state of Arkansas in 2023.” “There are all kinds of needs, especially roads.”
These include renovating local parks, creating new, more connected streets, building a new police station, converting old fire stations into community and senior centers, building new water tanks, and more. .
“Right now we only have a 250,000 gallon (tank) and we’re currently using almost a million gallons a day,” Latham said.
Funding would come from a $22.2 million bond, paid for by extending the current 0.75 cent sales tax. The program has a deadline of 2036, but leaders hope voters will agree to extend it to 2044.
Voters will first decide whether they want to refinance the bonds. Then vote on individual projects.
Up to $1.4 million in bond and tax repayments (for or against) Up to $7.1 million in police improvement bonds (for or against) Up to $7.1 million in street improvement bonds (for or against) Up to $5.5 million ( yea or nay) Parks and Recreation Improvement Bonds up to $1.1 million (yea or nay)
If any of the four projects fail, bond issuance will be reduced and the sales tax extension period will be shortened.
“We just need to take a step forward, and in 10 years we might see the results,” Latham said. “Maybe we can re-evaluate and decide if we need to remove it.”
Tonti Town residents will be able to vote on this issue during the general election. Early voting begins October 21st and Election Day is November 5th.
