MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – This Friday marks the 27th annual Eagle Awards in Mobile.
The Mobile Chamber of Commerce hosts an annual luncheon to recognize minority-owned businesses that have made an impact on the community and local economy.
Makeda Nichols, an agent with State Farm Insurance in Mobile, said her agency was nominated for induction into the Eagle Hall of Fame three times before earning that honor.
“You hear a lot about great people, but you don’t hear a lot about little people. I think that’s what inspires a lot of minorities to say, ‘Okay, I want to be like that, too.'” I’m an Eagle with Small Business. “I want to be part of the awards and the hall of fame,” she said.
To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, companies must meet certain criteria, including demonstrating outstanding community involvement.
“Our agency is well known for our excellent service and community support,” she said. “We try to participate in different things, like attending soccer last week, Latin Fest next week, and my favorite, Pet Fest.”
Nichols said the Eagle Awards program recognizes and supports minority-owned small businesses.
“It’s important that these businesses are recognized because it gives them an incentive to work harder and be part of the chamber.”
She said being inducted into the Hall of Fame gave her agency responsibility.
“You try to be professional because you have a reputation to protect,” Nichols said.
Nichols has some advice for other minority business owners.
“Keep doing what you’re doing and learn from your peers. As they say, try to play tennis with people who are better than you. So find a mentor in the community who can help you and learn from your peers. Please stick to it,” she told them.
This Friday, the Chamber will announce and celebrate the new 2024 Eagle Award recipients.
