SOUTHWICK, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – We previously covered the Southwick Civic Fund and its efforts to help Helen victims, and we spoke with John Deedy again on Thursday to find out that they have received a large amount of donations. He said they have received supplies, but now they need more supplies. Boxes, duct tape, etc. to deliver those items to people in need.
“I think it’s very important as humans to give back. I’m 59 years old and we’re aging. You’re young people and at some point in your life you have to give back. “I think we have to really look at the big picture of why we are here,” he said.
Joe Deedy of the Southwick Civic Foundation said he had no idea how many cardboard boxes and tape he would be able to process until he started packaging donations for Hurricane Helen victims. On Thursday, Dee Dee shared an update on how collection efforts have been progressing since we spoke with him earlier this week.
He claimed to have around 300 boxes and stressed that every little bit helps.
“Each trailer is probably a quarter full, and we’ve got everything from toothbrushes, which we promise, to garbage bags, to cleaning supplies, to canned goods, to animal food for dogs and cats. ” he said. Shared.
Transportation to North Carolina will be a region-wide effort.
When asked who was driving the car, Dee Dee joked. The Tinic landscaping company in town said, “We’ve got a new truck, so we have a gas card.” Another Steve, who also helped build the new food pantry, said the same thing. ”
Now that you have your equipment, you need to drive south. It’s up to you at home to finish loading the truck.
Once everything is filled, Dee Dee and his crew head to North Carolina. Their goal is to start traveling next week. If you have items you would like to donate, please stop by the parking lot where the Southwick Fire Department is located and drop them off. Remember that boxes and tape are also in high demand.
