“This portion of the original property lies in the basement of the Spreckel family home,” Schon said in an email to the Chronicle. “It includes the site of the original tennis court and is surrounded by world-class, unobstructed views of the Valley of the Moon while enjoying the convenience of being on the valley floor.”

The Spreckels family name is deeply woven into California history, and their wealth is rooted in the sugar industry. Legend has it that tribal chief Klaus Spreckels secured water rights in a poker game with the King of Hawaii, paving the way for his fortune to be built on the sugar plantations and refineries owned by the Spreckels Sugar Company.
In the late 19th century, Klaus’s son Adolf and his wife Alma, who founded the California Palace of the Legion d’Honneur in San Francisco, turned to Sonoma County and acquired 3,000 acres of land that would become the vast Sobre Vista Estate.

The land became famous for its man-made lakes, luxurious mansions, animal sanctuaries, and horse stables. By the early 20th century, Sobre Vista had turned into a haven for the elite.

Alma Spreckels, a San Francisco “great-grandmother” with a bohemian spirit who coined the term “sugar daddy” about her first husband, was also the father of boxing champion Gene Tunney, banker AP Giannini, and film icon. It hosted famous guests such as Mary Pickford and John Barrymore. Her nude portrait atop a 97-foot tower in Union Square commemorates victory in the Spanish-American War.

By the late 1940s, after Adolph’s death, the Sonoma property was divided into parcels and sold to developers.
“The connection to San Francisco and beyond, and the story that unfolds, provides an incredible history that further enhances this property and truly immerses residents in the beauty of Sonoma Valley,” said Sean.
