2004 — Seven-time All-Star and six-time NBA Champion forward Scottie Pippen announces his retirement from the NBA and the Chicago Bulls.

1900 — Harry Vardon of England wins the U.S. Open golf title by defeating J.H. Taylor with a total of 313 at the Chicago Golf Club.
1985 — Grambling defeats Prairie View A&M 27-7, making Eddie Robinson the winningest coach in college football. It was Robinson’s 324th career win, one more than Paul “Bear” Bryant achieved before retiring from Alabama after the 1982 season.
1991 — Fresno State scores 49 points in the second period to beat New Mexico State 94-17, tying the NCAA record for most points in a quarter. Fresno State’s Derek Mahoney tied the NCAA record with 13 extra points.
1994 — NBA reduces 3-point distance to 22 feet across the board.
1996 — Byron Hunspard rushes for 287 yards in his fifth consecutive 200-yard game of the season, leading Texas Tech to a 45-24 victory over Baylor.
2001 — Barry Bonds hits No. 71 and No. 72 to set a new single-season home run record, but San Francisco loses 11-10 to the Los Angeles Dodgers and is eliminated from the playoffs.
2001 — The Mariners win their 115th game of the year, becoming the winningest team in American League history, passing the record set by the Yankees three years earlier.
2005 — Daniel Alfredsson scores two points in the final six minutes of regulation and one in the first shootout in NHL history, leading Ottawa to a 3-2 victory over Toronto.
2006 — Brendan Shanahan of the New York Rangers scores two goals in a 5-2 win over Washington, becoming the 15th player to reach 600 goals in the NHL.
2008 — Peyton Manning turns a blowout loss by the Houston Texans into a stunning victory for the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts scored 21 points (two touchdowns thanks to Sage Rosenfels’ fumble) in 2:10 of the second half, holding off Rosenfels’ final comeback and winning 31-27.
2013 — No. 8 ranked Florida State remains undefeated in the Atlantic Coast Conference with a 63-0 win over No. 25 Maryland. Maryland matches the largest loss differential of any ranked team. On September 13, 1997, UCLA defeated No. 11 Texas, 66-3.
2013 — Marcus Mariota throws five touchdown passes and scores two scores, and second-place Oregon State beats Colorado State 57-16. The Ducks reached the 50-point mark for the fifth straight year, a school record. Oregon State has scored at least 55 points in every game under first-year coach Mark Helfrich.
2014 — Brian Hoyer hits Travis Benjamin with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 1:09 left, and the Cleveland Browns rally from a 25-point deficit to beat the Tennessee Titans 29-28. It was the biggest comeback by a road team in league history.
2014 — Denver’s Peyton Manning completed 31-of-47 for a career-high 479 yards, four TDs, including his 500th career, and two interceptions, and the Broncos defeated Arizona by 41 He helped defeat the team by a score of 20.
2015 — San Jose Sharks forward Raffi Torres is suspended by the league for the first 41 games of the season for an illegal check on the head of Anaheim’s Jakob Silverberg during an October 3 preseason game. He was suspended, making it the longest suspension in NHL history.
2017 — Connor McDavid, Alex Ovechkin, Wayne Simmons and Brandon Saad each score hat tricks in their teams’ season openers. This marks the first time in 100 years that four different players have scored at least three goals in a season opener since the NHL’s first two games were played in 1917.
