Rosboro, North America’s largest producer of laminated lumber, plans to spend about $120 million to build two new mills and expand its wood drying operations at its Springfield, Oregon, campus, Oregon Public Broadcasting says. reported (10-4-24).
Brian Wells, Rosboro’s Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Development, said: ”
Wells said the dry kiln expansion is nearly complete and both new plants should be operational by the end of 2026. It said this could create up to 100 new union jobs in total.
“These timber dollars were really powerful in building Oregon into what it is today. And my belief is that we as a community and as a state protect that heritage and That’s where you should be,” Wells added.
Rosboro closed its stud mill in Springfield in February, laying off 25 workers. Wells said that due to market conditions and government regulations, the facility was manufacturing products that were not profitable. “We are currently in a situation where the cost of obtaining logs to process into studs is higher than the price of selling the finished studs, and has been for about two years.”
Wells said the company will now re-equip the plant so that in the future it will be able to manufacture another product called laminate stock there. Mr Wells expects this will create up to 40 new jobs and be ready by early 2026.
