HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Republicans and Democrats have made it clear this is not the beginning of a great partnership between the opposing parties, but there’s one thing they can agree on: billions for Harris County. Voters say dollar bonds are wrong.
Harris County Democratic Party member Mike Doyle said the two proposals to create a $4.4 billion HISD bond are a bad idea, and Harris County Republican Party member Mike Doyle agreed, saying in a statement to ABC13:
“We knew from the beginning that these bond proposals lacked transparency and the fiscal responsibility that HISD has to taxpayers. HISD’s bond proposals lacked transparency and accountability. He has been criticized for his lack of it.”

Both parties said they did not trust the appointed school board or superintendent to be transparent about how the funds were used.
“They are wasting huge amounts of money on furniture and technology, which is guaranteed by their past performance. They will mishandle this money,” Doyle said.
HISD said in a statement that there are a vocal minority of people opposing the bond, who have a history of success that supports its credibility.
“Our performance over the past year shows that we are investing in what really matters: high-quality instruction, safe schools, and expanding opportunities for student achievement.”
Doyle said the number of people speaking out against the bond doesn’t seem like a minority to him.

“It’s too early to give it back to the people. I don’t think anyone, including Republicans, doesn’t realize this was a terrible, terrible idea to take over HISD,” Doyle said.
The bond proposal is split into two proposals on the ballot, and voters must vote for both. One will focus on school reconstruction and renovation, and the other will focus on lead abatement, security, and HVAC.
