WTAE Editorial: Proposed property tax hike in Allegheny County
Updated: October 17, 2024 2:06 PM EDT
This is an editorial from WTAE. Charles W. Wolford, president and general manager of WTAE, will speak on behalf of the editorial board. Allegheny County residents may face their first property tax increase in more than a decade. County Executive Sara Inamorato released her first proposed budget last week, calling for a more than 40% increase in property taxes, totaling the 2025 budget to include $1.2 billion in operating budget, $130.6 million in capital budget, and $130.6 million in capital budget. The capital was 1.8 billion dollars. Grant and benefit account budgets. Property taxes are calculated as a tax, and the rate will go from 4.7 mills to 6.9 mills, an increase of 2.2 mills that the county claims will cost the county’s average homeowner $180 a year. The last time property taxes went up in Allegheny County was more than a decade ago. County executives have warned that without this increase, the county faces an $80 million structural deficit. We believe a balanced budget is the right thing for the county. Balanced means a strategy that increases revenue while reducing expenses where necessary. County leaders need to make sure they are passing both sides of the ledger with a careful eye. A 40% jump in property taxes for homeowners should be the last option to make ends meet.
