It’s always frustrating when someone knows they’ve caused damage but doesn’t take responsibility for fixing it.
So what do you do if your neighbor’s kid scratches your car and your parents refuse to pay for professional repairs?
Do you want to deal with it yourself? Or do you find another way to solve the problem, even if it makes the other person angry?
In today’s story, one man finds himself in exactly this predicament and chooses the latter.
I’ll explain what happened.
A month ago, I found a scratch in my car’s paint so deep that the metal was visible through it. I was worried because I didn’t want it to rust.
I took my car to 4 different shops and asked for estimates for repairs. The lowest price was $1400.
I have a dashcam, but it can also record movements when the car is parked. It turned out to be from a kid I saw around before riding his bike into the car. The child was probably around 8 years old.
He visited the child’s parents.
I went to one of the houses where I saw the child and asked the family there if they knew him. They said he was one of their children’s friends and told me who their parents were.
I went to the house, told my parents about the accident, and asked them to write me a check to cover the repair costs. They told me not to do it because the price I told them was exorbitant.
They said they were sorry, but the best they could do was buy some paint and have their father, who apparently knew how to fix it, do it himself. I asked him if he had any experience working in a body shop or other than DIY and they said no. I said I would like to have it repaired by a professional.
After some research he found the perfect solution.
When I got home and read some books, I found out that an accident where you ride your bike and crash into something and cause damage should be covered by your homeowner’s insurance. So I thought of a way to get my money back without having to fight with my parents.
I decided to come back the next day and met my grandma there. I told her that her grandson had hit my car and asked if she could give me the homeowner’s insurance information so I could contact the family’s homeowner and resolve the issue. She did, and she was really kind and apologetic.
I went to the insurance company and filed a claim, sending photos and information of the car and drive recorder, and they told me they would refund me the repair cost.
Apparently his parents didn’t like his idea.
However, the mother of the family contacted me. My mother told me that I went behind her and her husband’s back to talk to my grandma and filed a homeowners insurance claim behind their backs and my premiums have gone up significantly even though I haven’t filed a claim. I was angry about this. Anyway, things are going well financially now.
She sent it to my business email. Because that was the only official way to contact me, but I haven’t responded yet.
Ita?
Yay! It’s a very awkward situation.

Sure, his car was damaged, but he could have handled this better considering his family isn’t doing well.
