Tim Bradley rightly wonders why heat pumps are so expensive in the UK (Letters, 1 October). he can’t be alone. The simple answer is that prices must go up, partly due to heat pump subsidies.
I received two quotes from the same contractor for the same home. One was a £5,000 grant and the other was a new higher grant of £7,500. The original quote shared with me on 27 September 2023 was a grant of £5,000 plus an additional £3,700 for a total of £8,700. The second, received on 26 August 2024, was a grant of £7,500 plus a strangely specific amount of £5,585.42, for a total of £13,085.42. Even if the grant is increased by 50%, it will be increased by 50%!
I’d like to go green and install a heat pump, but it doesn’t make any sense to extend the subsidy if the price could be double or even quadruple the cost of a new boiler. There is no. Something has to be done to change the market because right now this shiny green transition is just a dirty, tainted money grab.
