BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A group of McKinley High School students teamed up to clean up the grounds on Clinton Street this weekend.
The students spent Saturday morning mowing, weeding, and weeding in collaboration with various local organizations.
“This actually means a lot to me because I used to live here and I used to come here and pick up trash and stuff,” junior Jayden Bobbitt said.
Re-Tree Chairman Paul Maurer said he wants to preserve the property, calling it historic and owned by a company that makes bricks.
When asked about the students who have come forward to help, Maurer’s face lights up with a smile.
“They were here before I was here,” he said. “It was great to see them already involved and implementing this project.”
Plant WNY, a trade association for “green industry professionals,” facilitated the project with students and faculty from McKinley High School. Additional volunteers included members of Re-Tree WNY, Niagara Lawn & Garden Care, and Guys Weekend organizations.
“Over the years, the storms have come and the homeowner has tried to keep it up, but it’s just been too difficult a task,” Maurer said. “We have a lot of volunteers who are willing to help.”
Ron Carrea, who teaches horticulture at McKinley High School, said the volunteer project is “nothing new” for students who frequent the community.
“At Future Farmers of America, we practice leadership all the time,” Carrea said. “We always say that good work always comes back tenfold. People always want to give more than they take, and they understand that. .”
Kalea hopes this project will shine a positive light on the students attending the school.
