BATON ROUGE – Children had a chance to learn about financial basics at the annual Financial Literacy Weekend event, “Earn and Learn,” held at the Knock Knock Children’s Museum.
Parents start teaching their children early on how to earn, save, and budget money. Sunday’s event was free and children took part in hands-on activities aimed at testing their decision-making skills and promoting smart spending habits.
“The basis of this day is to teach children how to earn money and how to save money and spend it in the shop. It is also about giving back to the community. There’s a farmers’ market where you can pretend to buy produce, donate and give back,” said Christian Beatty, deputy museum director.
With the help of volunteers from the Louisiana Society of Certified Public Accountants (LCPA), they learned important skills for the future while exploring interactive exhibits such as running a farmers market.
“We believe in educating future bosses while they’re really young,” said LCPA President Brigitte Kaigler. It’s really great to have them learn about organizing and investing.”
At some stations, children had to work for money, such as making wallets, cleaning pennies, and making donuts for the bakery.
“We have a lot of activities. They save those coins in a bag and once they collect eight coins, they can go buy as many decorations as they want,” Beattie said. I did.
They also learned how to separate wants from needs and budget their money.
“The most important thing is that the children can remember the principles they learned here that they will live with throughout their lives,” Kaigler said.
