Kenai Peninsula Borough Council is considering an ordinance to purchase additional land for Chapman School in Anchor Point to improve the safety of student drop-offs. The land purchase would address safety concerns for the school, which is located at a busy intersection of Old Sterling Highway and a major highway.
Borough Mayor Peter Misiche, who sponsored the ordinance, said the expansion is needed to address safety concerns in the current drop-off area.
“We were considering other properties in the surrounding area, but the best option for the safety of the children at Anchor Point was to move away from the strange curves of the Old Stirling River and into a slightly more straight line. That’s what this property does,” Mitsche said.
Chapman School currently sits on 4.51 acres, but borough officials say they are running out of room to expand because it is surrounded by private property. The proposed purchase would give the school an additional 6.6 acres for future growth and safety improvements.
If passed, the ordinance would allocate $850,000 from the district’s general fund to purchase land for future school use.
The public will be able to weigh in on the proposal at a public hearing in Congress on November 12th.
