Tapit Trice after Woodward win on September 28th | Sarah Andrew
GI Bluegrass Stakes winner Tapit Trice (sire of Dunkirk) will return to his birthplace, Gainesway Ranch, to become a stud after retiring from racing, Central Kentucky Stud announced Tuesday afternoon. Tapit-Trice’s next scheduled appearance is Saturday afternoon in the $7 million GI Breeders’ Cup Classic, where he will improve on his 10th place finish. He will run for an affiliation with Mandy Pope-owned Whisper Hill Farm, LLC and Gainesway Stables.
“Winning the Grade I Bluegrass Stakes in partnership with Gainesway was a real highlight for our racing stable,” trainer Pope said. “We are very excited about Tapit-Trice’s potential as a stallion and will support him with some of our best mares.”
The 4-year-old Gray, bred by Gainesway, is a half-sister to 2018 champion 2-year-old filly and GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Jaywalk (Cross Traffic). He realized $1.3 million as a yearling at the 2021 Keeneland September Sale. The horse was a 2-year-old winner by Aqueduct, but captured the imagination of the pack in his first start as a 3-year-old, storming Gulfstream by eight lengths and earning him the title of “TDN Rising Star.” Victories continued at the GIII Tampa Bay Derby and the aforementioned Bluegrass. Although he wasn’t the favorite for the 2023 GI Kentucky Derby, he finished his sophomore season with strong finishes in both the GI Belmont Stakes and the GI Travers Stakes.
He has two of his three wins as a 4-year-old this year, including the GII Woodward Stakes and the GIII Monmouth Cup Stakes. Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher led Tapit-Trice to triple-digit Beyer Speed numbers, earning more than $1.7 million and six wins in 12 career games.

Gainesway sires Tapit Trice’s eternal leading sire, Tapit. The stud fee for Tapit Trice will be announced at the time of his retirement.
