GEICO has told some Tesla Cybertruck owners that it will not renew their insurance policies for the giant electric vehicles, saying the frequently recalled trucks do not meet standards.
Tesla Cybertruck owner Robert Stevenson was the first to elaborate on this sudden policy change, writing, “@GEICO says they can no longer insure my Cybertruck.” Tweeted.
“That doesn’t make sense because there are other cars out there that are more dangerous,” he wrote in a message that has since been deleted and reposted on Reddit. “Please let me know if you have any recommendations for insurance companies for my trucks. I have 8 cars with great records. I’m canceling all my Geico insurance. Bye-bye!”
Mr. Stevenson included a copy of a letter from the insurance company stating that “the vehicle does not meet our underwriting guidelines.”
However, the insurance company later reversed course and said it would continue to offer personal auto insurance to electric truck owners.
“GEICO provides nationwide coverage of the Tesla Cybertruck,” a spokesperson told The Daily Beast on Monday.
Earlier this month, Tesla recalled more than 27,000 Cybertrucks due to a software defect that delayed the delivery of rear-view cameras.
Although there were no reports of injuries caused by the flawed software, the debacle marks the fifth recall for the Cybertruck since CEO Elon Musk launched it in November 2023. Ta.
Previous recalls include two on the same day in June for defects in wipers, loose trim and jammed gas pedals.
