A drug dealer who built a real estate empire from ill-gotten gains has been arrested and sentenced in a raid by Spanish police.
Richard Baxter, 50, pleaded guilty to supplying heroin and cocaine and money laundering at a hearing at Kingston Crown Court on Friday.
Mr Baxter was detained by Spanish police in Valencia in August and extradited to the UK to face charges.
An investigation by the Met revealed that he was a key figure in a drug smuggling ring trafficking hundreds of kilograms of Class A drugs. The group then laundered the money through various companies.
Baxter used some of the money to build a property empire, owning four properties in the south-east worth at least £1.5 million, including a house in Surrey and a holiday chalet.
Detective Constable David Lawn, who led the investigation, said: “We have zero tolerance for anyone involved in criminal activity and are committed to combating the sale of dangerous illegal drugs that pose a threat to the public.”
“The Metropolitan Museum of Art is dedicating its expertise to combating drug crime and making our capital a safer place to live.
“Baxter’s conviction sends a strong message to those who seek to profit from the illegal drug trade that they will be held accountable for their actions in court.”
Baxter was remanded for sentencing at Kingston Crown Court on December 5.
