Founding director of Dimensional Fund Advisors in 1981, John “Mac” McCune is a financial engineer, entrepreneur, and environmental activist with an insatiable curiosity and relentless drive to lead more than a dozen companies in his lifetime. I started a company.
A self-described “data dog,” Mack was a pioneer in transforming investing from speculation to a science based on academic research.
In the 1970s, he formed a team at Wells Fargo Bank that developed an index fund, one of the first. This index fund was an investment vehicle that would later revolutionize the financial world. After helping launch Dimensional, Mack remained on the company’s board of directors while pursuing a wide range of interests, from fixed income investment innovation to sustainable agriculture to winemaking. He passed away on October 22, 2024 at the age of 90. He is survived by his wife Leslie, son Morgan, and daughter-in-law Alexa.
