A large concrete slab in the 1100 block of Northwest Third Street marks the location where Dollar General is building a DG Market store.
When it opens early next year, it will be the company’s second location in Fort Dodge. However, it plans to offer more groceries than the Dollar General store located at 1810 First Ave. S.
According to the company’s announcement, DG Market stores sell fresh meat, fruits and vegetables, refrigerated and frozen foods, and dairy products. Produce offered at DG Market includes lettuce, tomatoes, onions, apples, bananas, strawberries, potatoes, sweet potatoes, lemons, limes, and salad mixes, which the company says are the top 20 items commonly sold in grocery stores. Includes those listed. The store also sells miscellaneous goods.
Bringing a grocery store to the city’s Northwest River District has been a goal of neighborhood residents and city planners for years.
The store at 1149 Third Avenue Northwest will be 10,620 square feet.
The number of employees will be 10 to 15.
Dollar General may open a third store in Fort Dodge in the future. Vicki Leake, the city’s community and economic development manager, said the company expects to complete the purchase of some of the property on North 15th Street in March.
Goodlettsville, Tenn.-based Dollar General has had a store in Fort Dodge since 1993. It was previously located at 2736 S. First Ave., north of Aldi. The current Ichibangai Minami store opened in 2018.
