AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Helen did a lot of work with CSRA, and a month after the hurricane, people in and around her community are still doing so.
The Community Foundation is one such group. They announced a second round of relief grants to nonprofits on Monday totaling $743,000.

“This is the beauty of Community Foundations,” says Shel Berry, President and CEO of Community Foundations. “We are uniquely positioned to work with local nonprofits to answer the call, gain access to funding and support, and help them continue to support our communities. The hard work of rebuilding is just beginning, and the Community Foundation is committed to working with our community to recover from this historic storm. We are working on it.”
The day the storm hit, the Community Foundation established the Hurricane Helen Community Crisis Fund.
On October 8, they announced the first round of relief payments totaling nearly $1.6 million.
This grant distribution allocated more than $2.3 million to nonprofit organizations serving 18 counties in and around CSRA.
“These nonprofits are on the front lines of this disaster, putting tarps on roofs, cutting down trees, feeding and sheltering people, providing generators and fuel, and helping parents get jobs. We are working every day to provide childcare so they can return to school,” says Shell Berry. , President and CEO of the Community Foundation.
Donations went to Golden Harvest Food Bank, Family Y, Augusta Salvation Army, Aiken and other organizations.
