Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendell Jr. praised Dr. Mary Ann Spanos’ retirement during Wednesday night’s council meeting.
MAYVILLE, NY โ Dr. Mary Ann Spanos began her career in 1986 as a physical therapist specializing in geriatric rehabilitation. Since becoming leader of the Department of Aging Services, she has launched initiatives focused on helping older adults stay in their homes and stay connected to their communities.
At Wednesday night’s council meeting, Chautauqua County Executive Paul M. Wendell Jr. presented a certificate of recognition to Mr. Spanos, who retired after more than 20 years of service.
Mr. Wendell also recognized his national leadership as America’s Chairman on Aging and championed the needs of older adults on a broader scale. In 2022, Ms. Spanos was named a Woman of Distinction by the New York Senate.
“I would like to thank Dr. Spanos for her tireless service, dedication to the welfare of seniors, and her role as an inspirational leader in the community, and I wish her a happy retirement,” Wendell said in a statement.
The county has appointed Dana Corwin as interim director of the Department of Aging Services. Corwin is a registered nurse and lives in Mayville. She has worked in the department since 2008, advocating for seniors alongside Spanos.
“Dr. Spanos taught me not only the logistics of running this office, but also the heart behind it. “Her passion for helping people stay in their homes and in their communities is… , which I will continue to carry on,โ Corwin said.
