The AI industry is hungry for success
Just like plants and animals, humans drink water. But so are computers, especially those that run artificial intelligence training models. To make matters worse, much of the water used to keep data centers from melting down during intense computing is saturated with excess water, according to a report from JPMorgan Chase and the ERM Sustainability Institute. It means it’s coming from a certain place.
A medium-sized data center uses the same amount of water each year as a town of up to 50,000 people. Last year, all data centers in America used a total of 75 billion gallons of data. And one-fifth of that amount was from so-called “stressed” basins.
