Sadly, CBS had other plans for the actor and renewed the series after two episodes. Yes, Matlock has been renewed for season 2. This is great for a simple country lawyer, but doesn’t Kathy Bates deserve a Mai Tai and a beach chair after all these years? Still, this isn’t surprising considering Matlock was CBS’ best debut series in the past five years, according to The Hollywood Reporter. She will never retire at this rate.
Unfortunately, all the kids can’t stop chatting about Matlock, even about Matlock. The new series from Jane the Virgin creator Jenny Snyder Urman follows Mattie Matlock (Bates), who returns to work at the age of 76 and joins an elite law firm. The problem is that the original Matlock show exists in Matlock’s World (2024), just like in our world. This leads to all sorts of questions about how the Matlockverse works. For example, will seasons 7 to 9 of Matlock (1986) feature Cliff Lewis, the final partner of Ben Matlock, played by Daniel Roebuck? Assuming that, in the final season of Matlock, he starred as Jay Leno opposite Kathy Bates in The Night Shift. This makes us wonder: Does Kathy Bates exist in the world of Matlock, or is this The Last Action Hero in which all of Kathy Bates’ roles are recast by Sylvester Stallone? Is it the situation? Misery would have been a little more interesting if Stallone had thrown the mallet, but it would be a shame to lose her performance.
While promoting the series, Bates told The New York Times last month that it was the new series that convinced her how close she had come to retiring and that she would never retire. After the film flopped, she called her agent and told him she was ready to retire.
