MERRILL, Wis. (WSAW) – You may have noticed an increase in prices at the meat market. One company is dealing with an increase in meat orders from customers, forcing them to postpone some orders until January.
Merrill’s Geis Meat Market is working through a backlog of orders. Owner Andy Geis says part of the reason is the national cattle shortage.
“Typically, where a customer would bring in 10 or 15 head of beef for harvest, they would only bring in seven or eight people,” Geis said.
If you want to order the beef side directly, you’ll have to wait until mid-January.
“If you want a hamburger, a burger, a patty, a hot dog, anything like that, we have it all in the store. That’s just if you’re looking for a beef side right now,” Geis explained.
For those of you who were hoping that meat prices would start coming down in the near future, don’t hold your breath.
“We’re guessing that prices will continue to rise in 12 months when these animals are shipped and ready for harvest,” Geis said.
“I don’t think we’re going to see that in the near future because without a supply of beef, especially beef, it’s going to take a long time to replenish the herd,” said David, owner of Townline Market. Mr. Juggler said.
Townline is also dealing with rising prices. Beef prices have reached an all-time high of more than $8.15 per pound, according to a recent report from the Department of Agriculture. It affects producers and consumers.
“Right now, we’re seeing that some of the cheaper cuts that go into things like hamburgers are going up in price, so the price of hamburgers is going up,” Juggler said.
While these meat markets are dealing with some of the shortages, both owners say it hasn’t really affected sales. However, it’s still something you track to keep your business flowing.
Juggler says it’s important to be aware of what you’re buying, know what you’re looking for and pay attention to sales. He wants people to buy quality products, so he alludes to the common phrase, “You get what you pay for.”
