PEORIA (25News Now) – About 140,000 Illinois residents have received or will receive unclaimed property checks in the mail, and state treasurers are urging those residents to cash their checks. I encourage it.
On Tuesday, Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs announced these checks are part of the latest round of the Enhanced Money Match program. This program allows the Treasury Department to automatically return missing money to residents without ever having to file a claim.
The program uses data collected by the state and matches it to the treasurer’s unclaimed property database.
“We’re leveraging technology to put more money back into the hands of the people of our state. At the end of the day, that money is theirs,” Frerichs said. “But some people see a check in the mail and don’t think it’s real. Remember to deposit or cash the check or it will be treated as unclaimed property. We will be back.”
Anyone who may have unclaimed property can check the online database www.illinoistreasurer.gov/ICASH.
