Bosch is currently the first manufacturer to bring a cold climate heat pump to market as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Residential Cold Weather Heat Pump Challenge.
The new Bosch IDS Ultra Cold Climate Heat Pump is designed to keep your home warm even in frigid temperatures, making it a solid choice for those ready to move away from fossil fuel heat sources.
Cold-weather heat pumps are much more energy efficient than traditional oil or propane heating systems, reducing homeowners’ carbon footprint and lowering their utility bills. Plus, it works year-round for both heating and cooling.

DOE’s Residential Cold Climate Heat Pump Challenge was launched in 2021 to improve the performance of traditional heat pumps in extremely cold temperatures. Bosch collaborated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, as well as manufacturers such as Carrier, Daikin, and Lennox, to develop and test heat pumps that operate efficiently in cold climates. Bosch was the first company to launch a product from this challenge.
IDS Ultra can maintain 100% heating capacity down to 5 °F and can operate at temperatures as low as -13 °F (-25 °C). This performance is made possible thanks to Bosch’s Enhanced Steam Injection (EVI) compressor, which borrows heat from the hot side of the refrigerant cycle to keep your home comfortable even on the coldest days. The unit also complies with new low global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant requirements and has demand response capabilities to help utilities manage energy loads during peak demand periods.
IDS Ultra is eligible for federal tax credits as an Energy Star V6.1 cold climate certified product, with up to $2,000 in rebates available. The system is now available for purchase by HVAC professionals ahead of the 2024 winter season.
