More than 100 projects have received funding from 2022 onwards, including Northern Lily in Oldham.
Plans to build a ‘secret garden’ in a school and park meadow are one of 17 environmental projects across Greater Manchester to be awarded grants from the £370,000 fund.
A memorial garden in memory of those who have died from coronavirus is also set to receive funding in the fifth round of the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Green Space Fund.
Andy Burnham said it was “increasingly clear” that green spaces were “essential not only for local wildlife, but also for the health, physical and mental well-being of residents”.
He said he was also helping to develop Greater Manchester’s first nature plan, which “will form the basis for nature restoration across the city region”.
A total of 103 projects have been awarded funding since 2022, with the aim of improving knowledge about food cultivation and environmental stewardship.
Previous winners include Northern Lily, based in Oldham. Their community garden won awards from the RHS and the BBC’s The One Show and gained national attention.
Daveen Wallis, co-founder of charity Greater Manchester Environment Fund, called for ideas from business organisations, saying: We want to bring about change in nature. ”
