A woman who has sold donuts and ice cream in the town center for nearly 50 years said she was “overwhelmed” by the kind messages she received after retiring.
Lina Ognisanti, 83, was stationed at Midland Road, Bedford, from 1975 until her last shift on September 30th.
She said she missed “being in the center of town” but enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and walking her dog.
In 2018, after 3,000 people signed a petition calling for her recognition, she received a private mayoral reception from then mayor Dave Hodgson to express his gratitude.

Lina started selling ice cream in Bedford in the mid-1970s. They sold ice cream in the summer and donuts in the winter.
“I miss working in the town center and seeing everyone and chatting,” she said.
“I’ve been spotted out and about, and people are talking to me and wishing me well, which makes me so happy.
“Retirement was difficult, but I’m gradually getting used to having more free time.
“I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren, walking my dog, and gardening.
“Thank you to everyone who visited me for your kind words, cards and gifts.
“Thank you for all the memories over the years.”

Her Dinky Donuts stall was located near the former Marks and Spencer store in Bedford, which closed in 2019.
Her family said, “My mother is the most kind-hearted and hard-working person I know.
“Her entire family is so proud of her and truly amazed at the impact she has had on the community.”
They said she might occasionally return to a different location on Saturdays, but nothing has been confirmed.

Bedford resident Vicki Eldin said: “We are sad to see Lina go. She is one of Bedford’s favorite icons and is loved by everyone.
“I have known this wonderful woman since I was little, she always made time to chat with me, and she has watched generations of my family grow up.
“Congratulations on your retirement, Lina. You will be missed.”
