AUSTIN, Texas – Election Day is two weeks away. One of the things that could be on the ballot is Austin ISD’s Proposition A. Voters decide to increase property taxes to help fund school districts.
For the average homeowner in Austin, passing Proposition A would mean an increase of about $412 per year.
This would generate about $171 million, but the district would keep only a portion of it for the state to take back. There, wealthy districts would reimburse some of their wealth to the state and redistribute it to poorer districts.
AISD will keep $41 million, of which the district will spend $17.8 million on compensation plans.
Voters decide to raise property taxes
The Austin ISD Board of Directors has voted to include a potential property tax rate increase on the November ballot. This increase will help eliminate the district’s budget deficit.
“Here in Austin and Central Texas, we are facing a real affordability crisis for professional educators. We are ensuring we have the absolute best educators in front of our students,” said AISD Superintendent Matias Segura. “We have to have competitive wages to place them in the workforce.”
The plan includes market adjustments for teachers and staff, giving the most experienced teachers the highest raises.
If Proposition A passes, 85% of our staff will receive a raise. It’s probably the executives who don’t get raises.
“We’ve seen over the years that layoffs are happening. It tends to happen in large urban areas where people start families and move to the suburbs. It’s happening precipitously in Austin because of the high cost of living.” said Brandi Hossack, director of human resources. Strategy for AISD, he said.
The average salary increase breakdown is as follows:
Teachers just beginning their careers will see an increase of about 1.4%, and the most experienced teachers will see an increase of up to 7.3%.
“This package will put us in the market with the surrounding districts and allow us to continue to lead the market, even if we’re not in the market,” Hosak said.
AISD says it is facing a $92 million budget deficit due to inflation and a lack of funding from the state.

If Proposition A does not pass, full-time employees would receive a one-time payment of $500.
Under these circumstances, the ward continues to make reductions.
“We are currently identifying approximately $90 million in additional cuts, which we intend to make over a three-year period,” Segura said.
When the board voted to put Proposition A on the ballot in August, board member Kevin Foster cast the only “no” vote. He argued that there was a need to protest the state’s lack of funding for public education.
