ELKINS, W.Va. (WDTV) – On Wednesday, State Treasurer Riley Moore presented Elkins law enforcement with a check for approximately $38,000. Moore and his team met with officials at the Jennings Randolph Federal Center in Elkins and presented three checks. The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office received a check for $4,143.75, the Elkins Police Department received a check for $5,703.50 and the Mountain Area Drug and Violent Crimes Task Force received a check for $27,960.75. The money came from a firearms auction held in September at Moore’s warehouse in Charleston. Approximately 18 law enforcement agencies across the state, including three in Elkins, turned in the old firearms and put them up for bid. Corporal David L. VanMeter of the Mountain Region Drug and Violent Crime Task Force said the funds returned at the auction will go a long way toward improving the agency.
“We cover Randolph, Upshur, Barbour, Lewis, Braxton, Gilmer and more,” Corporal VanMeter said. “So these funds will go to all of these counties to help us get drugs off the streets and help us buy equipment and continue our work.”
Treasurer Moore and the Office of Unclaimed Property have returned more than $4 million to residents, businesses and organizations across the Mountain State, but Treasurer Moore says the work is far from done.
“The work on unclaimed property is never done,” said Treasurer Moore. “We have over $400 million in unclaimed property. But we passed legislation to really modernize this program and make it more modern, so we’re seeing an increase. We just sent out a multi-million dollar check from the Cash Now program. There is no need to file an unclaimed property claim. The amount is between $100 and $5,000. It will be shipped automatically. If you see a check in the mail with my name on it, please cash it.”
