ALABASTER – Alabaster City Hall was filled with concerned residents of the Saddle Lake Farms subdivision during the Monday, Oct. 15, meeting featuring a public hearing for the rezoning of 101 Equestrian Drive. Ta.
During its meeting, the Alabaster City Council held a public hearing on an ordinance that would rezone 101 Horse Drive from a city reserve to an agricultural district without restriction. The zoning request was against property owner Allison Hollins.
The property under consideration was presented to the Alabaster Planning and Zoning Commission during its Oct. 24, 2023, meeting and received an adverse recommendation from the commission.
At the Oct. 15 public hearing, Hollins spoke in favor of the rezoning, arguing that the Planning and Zoning Commission had not given him any reason to deny it.
“All that happened at that meeting was a bunch of mean, ugly people from the subdivision came and kept saying ugly things and all of a sudden there was a vote against it,” Hollins said.
Several residents spoke at the public hearing and expressed their opposition to the rezoning proposal.
Melissa Wiley, president of the Saddle Lark Farm Homeowners Association, spoke at the public hearing and said she opposes the rezoning.
“We are against zoned agriculture,” she said. “The meadow is the first visual part of our professionally maintained and landscaped entrance.”
Wiley argued that rezoning for agriculture would detract from the neighborhood’s aesthetics and reduce home values.
Resident Michelle Weaver lives next door to the property under consideration and voiced her opposition to the rezoning proposal.
“We’ve been on the market for seven months trying to sell our house, but we can’t sell it because everyone’s worried about what’s going to happen to their backyard,” Weaver said.
After the public hearing closed, the Alabaster City Council unconditionally rejected the agricultural zoning change request.
