A Rockland woman said her family’s safe deposit box was found empty earlier this year. Now the bank has provided the funds but there is no response.
Chase Bank in Stony Point kept the family’s belongings safe for nearly 30 years until last June, when the lock on the safe deposit box was changed and it was discovered that nothing was inside.
“I’m devastated. I’m absolutely devastated,” Vivian Elbetta said as she showed News 12 some of the things missing from photos taken on past visits. Items missing included jewelry, family heirlooms and thousands of dollars. There is a receipt stating that Mr. Chase is prepared to pay for it.
“We worked hard for these things, and I’m sure our parents and grandparents worked hard for these things, too. So giving just a few dollars toward that is… , it’s really not legitimate,” Elvetta said.
Stony Point police say the investigation is still ongoing. They have a subpoena requesting the video and are waiting for the bank to produce it.
“The bank has done an excellent job of obstructing both us and the police, while at the same time refusing to give us any information about who was in what boxes,” Elbetta said.
The unanswered questions leave this longtime client with a message for the bank and other bankers. “I want to know what happened. I want them to see how it affects people. I want them to see how it affects other people who put their stuff in there,” Elbetta said. I want them to take it out, because I don’t want the same thing to happen to me.” It happens to everyone else. ”
In response to News 12’s questions, a Chase spokesperson said the company does not track what customers put in and out of safe deposit boxes, but added that the company has offered to cover the items.
News 12 reported that Chase complied with the subpoena, but the video does not exist.
