It was learned on Friday that Toyota Motor Corporation and Denso are considering additional investment in Japanese semiconductor maker Lapidus, which aims to produce next-generation semiconductors domestically.
Rapidus is asking existing shareholders, including Toyota Motor Corporation, to invest a total of 100 billion yen in working capital and capital investment.
Six companies, including Toyota and Denso, invested a total of 7.3 billion yen in this semiconductor manufacturer. In addition, Sony Group and NEC are also planning to make additional investments.
Another investor, Bank of Mitsubishi UFJ, is considering making a new investment of up to 25 billion yen, along with three other banks that are not current investors, including Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation.
Lapidus aims to begin mass production of chips in 2027 at a factory currently under construction in Chitose, Hokkaido, the northernmost tip of Japan. Toyota reportedly wants to use the chip in self-driving systems.
