GADSDEN, Ala. (WBRC) – A former steel mill in Gadsden will soon be transformed into a new area for relaxing and strolling under a canopy of trees. The city is getting $80,000 from the Alabama Forestry Commission.
Tena King, Gadsden’s director of urban services, said the purpose of the grant is simple: the city wants to make the area more beautiful by planting 250 new trees.
The old steel mill industrial site is currently occupied by several businesses, and the city wants to plant trees that will create a canopy to provide shade and hide some of the areas where slag piles are still visible from the road. said Mr. King. .
This new canopy project joins the Downtown Gadsden Greenway Project, which is planned drainage improvements, new sidewalk and roadway infrastructure in South Gadsden.
“We recently removed the sidewalks over there to make it more walkable. And we want the community to be able to get out and walk and feel safe in that area. Of course. We’re trying to connect the whole city. Having a walkable city is a huge thing for us, and it’s safe and we have camera systems in place and we have a way to call the police.” Mr. King said.
King said it is unclear when the project will begin. Once completed, it will provide a safe place for people to get out and walk.
