One of the two teenagers accused of fatally hitting a former police chief as he rode his bicycle on a Las Vegas road has been found incompetent to stand trial.
Jesus Ayala, now 19, was transferred from prison to a secure psychiatric facility in Nevada for evaluation and treatment, and could stand trial if he is found competent, according to cover records. The commitment order halts criminal charges against him.

Last year, Ayala and Zamir Keyes, who was 16 at the time, pleaded not guilty to murder and other charges in the death of Andreas “Andy” Probst, 64, a former police chief in the Los Angeles suburb of Bell.
In August 2023, Probst was riding his bicycle when he was rear-ended by the driver of an allegedly stolen vehicle, leaving him on the side of the road with life-threatening injuries, video footage showed.
Footage of the hit-and-run shows the driver asking, “Are you ready?” A laughing passenger records the crash on his iPhone.
“Yeah, yeah, yeah, hit A,” he told the driver, who then swerved the Hyundai Elantra into the bike lane behind Probst. Probst was pedaling in a red shirt and shorts.

The passenger turned around, pointed his iPhone out the window, and recorded Probst rolling to a stop on the side of the road.
“Damn, that thing knocked me out!” the passenger says in the 31-second clip.
“Oh, oh, I have to get out of here,” the panicked driver replied, pressing on the gas.
Probst was taken to the hospital, where he died. Police arrested Ayala later the same day, but the suspect boasted that “it would be easy for a young boy.”
A police officer’s body camera reportedly captured the man saying, “I’ll be out in 30 days.”
The officer replied, “In 30 days, you could be out of the juvenile prison and transferred to an adult prison, because that would be very bad.”

The incident report noted that Ayala showed no remorse for the man’s death. “It’s just a hit and run. Give me a slap on the wrist,” the boy told the officer flippantly.
Keyes was arrested days after she shared footage of her illness with a friend on Instagram, which also began circulating at a local high school.
