CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – Mike Capaccio, who has served as The Citadel’s director of athletics for the past six years, announced his retirement from the position Thursday morning. He will remain in that position until a successor is hired, after which he will transition to his new role as Senior Advisor, Athletic Funding to the Citadel Chairman.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Citadel, first with the Foundation and then as Athletic Director,” Capaccio said in a school statement. “It has been an honor to work with the cadets, students, coaches and fans as our teams have competed in every sport. We have laid the foundation for success in every program and look forward to the future. I look forward to attending games and cheering on the Bulldogs for many years to come.”
The school said a national search for his replacement will begin soon.
“I would like to thank Mike for his tireless dedication to The Citadel and his passion for our team and players,” said Marine Corps Gen. (retired) Glenn M. Walters, ’79, president of The Citadel, in a statement. Ta. “Mike will hire top-notch coaches, renovate Johnson Hagood Stadium, raise money for athlete scholarships, and navigate a dynamic college sports landscape that is vastly different than when he started as a college athlete. The Citadel family is grateful for his leadership.”
Capaccio has made key hires at the school in recent years, bringing back alumnus Ed Conroy for a second term and bringing in alumnus Maurice Drayton to lead the football program. This summer, Russell Triplett was also hired as the new head baseball coach.
