MEMPHIS, Tenn. – People dream of winning the lottery.
However, you could now have thousands of dollars to your name.
Each state in the Mid-South has an “unclaimed property” database where residents can search to see if they owe money to businesses in their state.

You may need to pay a final salary, insurance benefits, or security deposit.
“It’s money that the business or organization is really supposed to give you back, but they just couldn’t find you,” said Shelley King, a spokeswoman for the Tennessee Department of Treasury. “Maybe they have the wrong address. It may have been,” he said. Maybe he moved. ”
If a Tennessee company can’t find you, it has to turn over the money to the state, which keeps a record of it in this database.
When you add up all the big and small amounts owed to people across Tennessee, you get a lot of change.
“It’s well over $1 billion,” King said.

A person in Shelby County has $390,000 in debt, according to state data. Seven people have debts of more than $200,000.
FOX13 jumped in the car with names and addresses in hopes of finding people with missing debts. But minutes turned to hours as our team knocked on nearly 30 doors in Shelby County.
Most of the places listed were apartments. One address was literally an empty lot overgrown with weeds.
At nearly every address FOX13 visited, the person had moved. Perhaps that’s how they got on the list in the first place.

In a crowded public parking lot, our team brought in laptops and microphones hoping to help people search their names in state databases.
René Fumich recently learned that her family owed more than $355. This happened after FOX13 searched Tennessee’s database for “unclaimed property.”
