INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Indiana State Police celebrated the retirement of one of its police dogs Tuesday.
K-9 Apache was a drug-sniffing dog. He had been working with his handler, Officer Walter Butt, since 2016.
Butt says he’s still alive thanks to the Apache that intercepted a bullet during a police shooting in October 2017.
Mr. Butt said Tuesday of his partner Apache: Since that incident happened in 2017, I feel like I have become even stronger. But now he can be a dog and relax at home, get his belly rubbed and get all the balls he wants. ”
A special ceremony for Apache involved each police dog’s handler tossing him a tennis ball, culminating in about 15 to 20 tennis balls flying through the air at a time.
The dispatcher also gave the Apache a 10-42 broadcast. This is typically done when a police officer finishes his or her assignment.
The ceremony took place at the Kuulsen sprinkler facility near 39th Street and Arlington Avenue.

“On September 16, 2016, Apache began his career with his partner, Officer Walter Butt, assigned to the Indianapolis area. During his career, Apache was involved in an officer-involved shooting in October 2017. His efforts undoubtedly saved lives, including being shot by his handler during the incident.The suspect was taken into custody, and Apache made a full recovery and returned to duty three weeks later.
