IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – A Coralville woman was arrested Friday. Police said that after the money she was supposed to have deposited was lost or stolen, she falsified a bank deposit slip at the restaurant where she worked to cover the loss.
Jillian Begg, 45, was charged with second-degree fraud.
The investigation began on Aug. 14, when the owner of the Jimmy John’s store at 2569 N. Dodge St. in Iowa City noticed more than $8,460 missing in the store’s bank account.
Begg, the restaurant’s manager, admitted to the owner and detectives that the money was missing, according to the criminal complaint.
Detectives said Begg put all of May’s deposits into a bag and left it in his car for the purpose of depositing the money.
However, she told law enforcement that she forgot to deposit the money and went to several stores before returning home that night. The next morning, her bag was missing from her car.
Police said Begg told police she thought her bag had been stolen from her car when she stopped at one of the stores that night.
There was no sign of forced entry into Begg’s car, but the power locks were not activated.
The criminal complaint alleges Begg tried to cover up the losses by using new daily deposits from the restaurant. He allegedly falsified the date on the new deposit slip and deposited the money using a false date.
