President Biden said Friday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency has the “resources we need right now,” but that the agency and other agencies are working on long-term recovery efforts, including assistance to farmers who suffered crop losses later this year. They sent a letter to Congressional leaders saying they would need money to do so.
“FEMA’s Disaster Relief Fund has the money we need right now to meet immediate needs, but we face a funding gap at the end of the year,” Biden said in a letter to leaders.
“Without additional funding, FEMA will have to forego long-term recovery efforts to meet immediate needs. Congress should provide FEMA with additional resources to eliminate such unnecessary trade.” “We must avoid forcing shutdowns and give the communities we serve confidence that support continues in the short and long term,” Biden said.
“We are committed to maintaining trust with these communities, rebuilding housing infrastructure, assisting farmers and ranchers who have suffered crop losses, addressing affected schools, and repairing damaged federal highways. We urge you to provide the requested additional funding.
“In addition to FEMA’s continued support, these are the resources our communities need and deserve to fully respond to and recover from catastrophic events,” Biden said.
Separately, Biden responded to a request from North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper to move 500 additional active-duty troops with advanced technology assets to Western North Carolina to assist with response and recovery efforts. He announced that he had ordered it.
“Today, a total of 1,500 troops, including more than 6,100 National Guard members and more than 7,000 federal employees, complement a strong field effort, and my administration will support families as they begin the path to recovery,” Biden said. We will spare no resources to do so.” Said.
Former President Trump said on the campaign trail that there was a shortage of disaster relief funds because FEMA diverted funds to aid immigrants, but FEMA officials denied this, saying the money to help immigrants came from a separate fund.
