A Massachusetts man has been charged with defrauding home repair insurance companies by charging them for repairs that were never performed, the office of Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy reported.
According to the indictment, Christian DeCristofaro, 40, of Newburyport, allegedly sold contracts to NE Premier Home Services LLC, a home repair company he owns, for a home repair insurance company. It is suspected that he was registered as a business operator. Prosecutors allege that DeCristofaro used false or stolen identification to enroll non-existent or unsuspecting homeowners into insurance plans with unidentified insurance companies. are.
DeCristofaro then allegedly reported a fictitious home emergency to the insurance company on behalf of the alleged homeowners and asked Northeast Premier to handle the repairs. His company, NE Premier, then allegedly billed the insurance company for repairs, even though inspections of the property showed no evidence that any repair work had been done.
As a result of these fraudulent claims, approximately from 2022 to 2023, the insurance company allegedly paid NE Premier at least $1.5 million for services that NE Premier did not provide.
Mr. DeCristofaro was arrested and charged with wire fraud. The wire fraud charge provides for up to 20 years in prison, up to three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000 or twice the gross profits or losses from the crime, restitution, and forfeiture. S
