ROANOKE, Va. – It wasn’t a question of “if,” it was simply a matter of “when.”
It was during Virginia Tech football’s spring game that women’s hoops legend Elizabeth Kitley learned she would be retiring her number 33. The only question left is when will it happen?
According to the Virginia Tech athletics website, January 19th is a special day. That Sunday, the Hokies will host Louisville with tipoff at 4 p.m.
Kitley, who played five seasons, is the program’s all-time leader in games started, minutes played, points and points averaged. She had the most double-digit scoring games, field goals made, FG percentage, 30-point games and blocks than any other player in program history. She holds ACC records for rebounds (1,506) and double-doubles (76).
During the 2023-24 season, she led the Hokies to the first ACC regular season title in program history, led the league in scoring and rebounding, and won her third consecutive ACC Player of the Year trophy. In addition, she earned First Team All-ACC honors for the fourth time, earned All-Defensive Team honors for the third time, and was named Cayo Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third time.
The Summerfield, North Carolina, native was a key part of the Hokies’ first Final Four appearance and was selected 24th overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Las Vegas Aces.
