MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – Approximately $80,000 in funding from the Cherish Wisconsin Outdoors Fund will support five habitat projects on public lands in Calumet, Dane, Florence, Sauk and Vilas counties. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday.
The fund is administered by the DNR and the Wisconsin Natural Resources Foundation (NRF). This fund was established to protect, restore, and improve state programs and animal habitats. Most of the funding comes from voluntary donations from people who purchase hunting and fishing licenses.
Selected projects include High Cliffs State Park in Calumet County, Roddy Marsh Wildlife Refuge in Dane County, Spread Eagle Barrens State Preserve in Florence County, Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area in Sauk County, and Vilas. The county’s Northern Highlands American Region State Forest.
These projects were selected through a grant application process and reviewed by a variety of organizations including Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, Whitetails Unlimited, Wisconsin Bird Conservation Partnership, and the Wisconsin Waterfowl Association. .
The DNR and NRF appreciate the participation of these organizations in selecting the Cherish project and encourage hunters to consider a donation when purchasing a license.
