PERSPEKTIVE Foundation is pleased to announce the winner of the 2024 Architectural Ideas Competition, Dream Kitchen.
This year’s Architectural Ideas Competition asked participants to design kitchens that respond to the challenges of modern society. What does the kitchen look like today, when all major cities are facing housing shortages? When inflation continues to drive up food prices, and when resource constraints are forcing millions of people to Is it time to experiment with new forms of cooking, whether small or large, indoors or outdoors, communal or individual, designed for traditional energy sources and food? Anything was possible, even if it was designed to. The theme was narrowly defined and the only limitation was the imagination and creativity of the participants.
The organizers received a total of 89 applications from Germany and France. The profiles of applicants who submitted projects were very diverse depending on their background. The French and German jurors were Sophie Delhay (architect, director of EPFL’s Lausanne architecture department in Switzerland), Laurian Gricoeur (director of the Abattoir Museum in Toulouse), and Jan Liesegan (co-founder of Raumreiber in Berlin, Bergen University of Architecture). Professor). School, Norway), MITKUNSTZENTRALE (a collective of architects, designers and artists Martina della Valle, Erik Gonrich, Susanne Schröder and Nora Wilhelm who run the Berlin-based art space SATELLIT).
For this edition, the jury has chosen to split the prize money of 10,000 euros between the three best projects. This means each winner will receive 3,333.33 euros. By choosing to award equal awards to these three projects, the jury recognizes excellence in their respective fields. The first three prizes will be awarded to the following (winners in alphabetical order):
Harry’s Bude as a Culinary Commune, Culinary Commune as Architecture by Fanti Baum and Sebastian Klawiter (Munich, Germany). The jury was impressed by the project’s concept of converting a church into a space for cooking and distributing food to those in need. They praised how the idea engaged with the heritage’s previous features. This project aims to replace unstable food distribution sites with permanent structures. The jury also selected a bona fide community kitchen to prepare meals once a week. This forms social bonds and opens up the church space to the city and its inhabitants.
Gastroburn (Paris, France) by Jan Motleff. The project quickly attracted attention for its originality and conceptual coherence. This work tackles the big problem of our time: food insecurity, which affects more than 8.5 million people in France and Germany. The idea for Gastroburn was born out of the realization that to solve a problem we needed to build a dining table 1760 km long. A huge infrastructure for preparing and serving meals, spanning Germany and France.
“Soup Populaire” by Camille Rouault (Uchizy, France). The jury was struck by the impact of the idea, which modified the soup kitchen concept with a “cyberpunk twist” and replaced it with a coupe, a luxury car that is now banned from driving due to environmental regulations. Therefore, it questions the social inequalities of our time. This project smartly addresses current environmental issues by converting these polluting cars into hybrid vehicles thanks to new LPG technology that can be used for cooking. The jury also appreciated that this method of hospitality can be practiced in countless locations.
The jury recognized Zaur Hussein Zada and Victoria Fernandez’s “Device” and Tiro as originality in addressing the highly topical issue of artificial intelligence playing an increasingly important role in everyday life.・Special recognition was given to Mr. Sebastian’s “Fermen-table” project. Preuß is recognized for its insightful research on nutrition, health and the environment, combining fermented foods with advanced technology.
The award ceremony will be held on Friday, November 8, 2024 at the Aedes Metropolitan Institute in Berlin, in the presence of the three winners, the jury and the competition organizers. The top 10 projects shortlisted for their quality will be presented at the exhibition. The ceremony will also include a lecture by Thibault de Ruyter on the theme of “Dream Kitchen.”
