Attorney General Anthony G. Brown announced today that Chanelle Angelia West, 46, of Essex, Maryland, has pleaded guilty to insurance fraud and felony theft in separate cases in Baltimore County Circuit Court.
West, a former clerk at the Maryland Department of Labor, admitted to a theft scheme that involved altering checks made to the state. She deposited these altered checks into her personal account while working for the department and continued forging checks after leaving the department. The value of the theft was between $1,500 and $25,000.
In a separate case, West also pleaded guilty to insurance fraud. She falsely claimed wages lost due to a car accident after she had already been fired from her state job in 2022.
Sentencing in both cases is scheduled for December 6, 2024 in Baltimore County Circuit Court.
Attorney General Brown thanked the Fraud and Corruption Unit, Baltimore County State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger, and the attorneys and investigative teams who worked on this case.
