ATHENS, Ala. (WAFF) – A celebration was held Friday to mark the completion of more than $800,000 in renovations to the Athens Limestone Farmers Market.
The location has also been officially renamed the Athens Farmers Market at Doug Gates Park.
“Farmers Markets and Doug Gates are both valuable assets to our community. Founded in 1986, the market has served thousands of growers and customers, but Doug Gates through 2022), he has quietly guided numerous community initiatives,” said former County Extension Coordinator Kurt Grissom.
Gates was known for his passion for downtown Athens and for supporting the mission of Athens’ Main Street.
“Doug worked tirelessly to support local entrepreneurs,” said Tere Richardson, executive director of Athens Main Street. Dedicating not just a park, but also a park that fosters small business is a fitting way to honor his memory. ”
The Athens Limestone Farmers Market has grown over the decades. Various improvements made in 2019 (such as handicap accessible restrooms and new vendor tables) further increased the market’s popularity and created the need for further renovations.
In 2022, large-scale renovation work will begin on the former market site.
